Despite the attempts of liberalization and democratization, the State of Vatican still carries the burden of the choices it made at the 20th century.
Vatican’s participation in the Cold War, through the strengthening of anti-regime forces at the former Eastern Bloc and its tolerance and help towards regimes that were supported by paramilitary death squads from Lebanon to Nicaragua, cast a dark shadow over the city.
And it is these choices, and not only the child molestation scandals, that are responsible for Vatican’s reputation.
