Lake Retba lies 30 kilometers to the northeast of Dakar and produces the salt that Senegalese fisherman use to store and maintain their fish.

Workers can stay in water for up to 7 hours after they smear themselves with karite butter that protects their skin.

The pink color of the water owes its existence to Dunaliella Salina, a species of algae that produces the specific pigment in order to absorb greater amounts of light.
